Internet porn is changing German sex lives

The internet is fueling change to the ways in which Germans have sex, according to a survey, as increased viewing of pornography makes people less inhibited.

Scholars at the German Society for Social Scientific Sexuality Research working with London’s City University have concluded that a third of men and close to one in 10 women watch porn on a daily basis.

This has contributed to what experts say is a spike in plastic surgery on the genitals and growing pressure at home for couples to have porn-style sex.

The research was based on four months of analysis including an online poll of 55,000 Germans.

“Pornography, in the sense of the description and depiction of sexual activities, is something of interest to every man and woman whether he or she visits [porn sites],” said Rolf Gindorf, a sexologist and former president of the sexuality research society, based in Düsseldorf.

“Our study showed that 98 per cent of men and 90 per cent of women admit to an interest in pornography.”

Focusing on the ways sexual attitudes and mores have changed in recent decades, the poll questioned people’s range of sexual fantasies and desires and concluded that Germans have become more liberal, more accepting, and more active about the sexual possibilities open to them.

At least half of all 14-year-olds surveyed have watched pornography, and large numbers of young German women say they feel their boyfriends want them to behave like porn stars in bed.

“A lot of sexualities were hidden because people were afraid to admit these fantasies and activities,” Gindorf added. “Now with the internet it is obvious many people share the same ideas and wishes and feelings.”
